National Poppy Day 2024

National Poppy Day 2024

Honoring Sacrifice and Service

National Poppy Day: A Tribute to Our Heroes

Join us in commemorating the brave men and women who have served our nation. Wear a red poppy to honor their sacrifices and support those who continue to protect our freedoms. Post 64 in collaboration with Jew War Veterans Post 619, we collected donations for both organizations at the Fry’s Store on Ray Rd. on the 25th and 26th. We out stickers to children and homemade poppy flowers to the individuals that wanted them.

A Symbol of Remembrance and Sacrifice

The Legacy of National Poppy Day

National Poppy Day is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by our veterans. Originating from the American Legion Family’s efforts, this day is observed on the Friday before Memorial Day. The red poppy has been a symbol of sacrifice since World War I, representing the blood shed by soldiers in battle. Each year, members of The American Legion Family distribute poppies, encouraging donations to support veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their families. The poppy serves as a powerful emblem of the cost of freedom and the enduring gratitude we owe to those who have served.

Every year, on the Friday before Memorial Day, Americans don a red poppy to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in service to our nation. This simple yet profound gesture serves as a powerful reminder of the cost of our freedoms and the enduring legacy of those who have served. The tradition of wearing a red poppy dates back to World War I, inspired by the poignant poem ‘In Flanders Fields,’ which immortalized the red poppies growing amidst the graves of fallen soldiers.

The red poppy has since become a symbol of both remembrance and hope, worn to honor the fallen and support the living veterans who continue to bear the scars of war. By wearing a red poppy, we not only commemorate the sacrifices made by our heroes but also pledge our support to those who have returned home. This act of remembrance and solidarity is a testament to our collective gratitude and commitment to ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.

In Flanders Fields Written - By John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

Join Us in Honoring Our Veterans
