The Significance of the US Flag
The US flag stands not just as a symbol of our country’s freedom and history, but as a beacon of hope and unity for the veterans we serve. At American Legion Post 64, we uphold flag etiquette to honor those who have served and sacrificed.
A Testament to Our Values
Through our actions and respect for the flag, we reaffirm our commitment to the principles of liberty and justice for all, especially our veterans.
Guide to Proper US Flag Etiquette
Understanding the correct way to display and handle the US flag is a mark of respect and patriotism. It is crucial to ensure the flag is displayed prominently and with honor, especially during national holidays and American Legion events. Always hang the flag with the union (blue section) to the observer’s left and ensure it is never touching the ground. When raising the flag, it should be done briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
For those in the American Legion, flag etiquette is not just a protocol, but a way to express our commitment to the nation’s values. The flag should be illuminated if displayed at night and should not be used for any decoration or advertising purposes. During inclement weather, an all-weather flag should be used, and traditional flags should be respectfully stored. Remember, a worn or tattered flag should be retired with dignity, preferably through a flag retirement ceremony.
