Are You a Veteran in Need of Assistance?
Accessing the Department of Veterans Affairs Benefits for Veterans.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is an essential governmental organization committed to delivering comprehensive healthcare, various benefits, and dignified burial services to eligible military veterans, their families, and survivors. This crucial agency provides a vast array of benefits designed to support veterans in multiple aspects of their lives, including disability compensation for service-related injuries, educational support to facilitate career advancement, vocational rehabilitation services to assist with job readiness, home loan assistance to promote affordable housing, life insurance options to secure financial stability, and interment and memorial services at national cemeteries to honor their sacrifices. Additionally, the Department of Veterans Affairs manages the largest integrated public healthcare system in the nation through its Veterans Health Administration, ensuring that veterans receive the quality care they deserve in a coordinated and efficient manner.
VA Healthcare System
The VA Healthcare System is one of the core divisions within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), dedicated specifically to providing medical care and wellness support to eligible veterans. While the Department of Veterans Affairs includes multiple branches—such as the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) and the National Cemetery Administration (NCA)—the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is the portion responsible for delivering healthcare services.
The VA Healthcare System operates a nationwide network of medical centers, outpatient clinics, and community-based facilities that offer a full range of services, including primary care, mental health, specialty treatment, rehabilitation, and preventive health programs. It is designed to meet the unique needs of veterans, addressing both service-connected and general health conditions.
Beyond treatment, the VA Healthcare System focuses on wellness, recovery, and long-term support, helping veterans live healthier, more fulfilling lives. Through partnerships with local communities and organizations like the American Legion, veterans can receive guidance, connect with resources, and get the help they need to access the care they’ve earned through their service.

Buddy Check Program
In the initial four years following the launch of Buddy Checks as an official initiative by The American Legion, more than 1 million veterans have been reached and supported. These Buddy Checks serve as straightforward check-ins with veterans within the community, aiming to assess their well-being and determine how Post 64 might be able to assist them. In 2023, the Department of Veterans Affairs established National Buddy Check Week to encourage participation among local American Legion posts. Buddy Check teams at Post 64 make calls on a monthly basis or even more frequently, and advised of local resources, such as the post Veteran service officers, Vet Centers, and VA healthcare facilities, to offer assistance when needed. Veterans are also reminded of the 988 Crisis Line for urgent help, whether for themselves or someone they know.
Financial Resources
National Level: Since 1925, The National American Legion has offered Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) program, which provided cash grants to support the minor children of active duty service members and American Legion members in times of need. More Information can be located on the National site about the process. Click Here.
Local Post: American Legion Post 64 offers emergency grants/funds for basic living expenses tied to hardship and family crisis, for veterans and veteran’s immediate family. which requires a demonstrated financial need, specific eligibility criteria.
