Our Mission

Our Mission, Our Motto, Out commitment to each other.

“To enhance the well-being of America’s veterans, their families, our military, and our communities by our devotion to mutual helpfulness, Veterans helping veterans.”

The Mission of the American Legion

National American Legion

National American Legion

The American Legion stands as the nation’s largest veterans service organization, dedicated to advocating for veterans, active-duty service members, and military families. Its mission centers on ensuring those who have served our country receive the care, benefits, and recognition they have earned, while also addressing critical challenges facing the veteran community—most notably the ongoing fight to end veteran suicide.

Through programs, outreach, and direct support, the organization works to strengthen communities, mentor youth, and promote patriotism and responsible citizenship. A key part of this mission is providing assistance to vulnerable veterans and their families through initiatives supported by the Veterans & Children Foundation, which delivers essential financial aid and resources when they are needed most.

In honor of America’s 250th birthday, the American Legion invites individuals and communities to take part in the USA250 Challenge—a nationwide effort designed to celebrate this historic milestone while raising critical funds to support veterans and military families. By participating, supporters not only commemorate our nation’s legacy but also help ensure that those who served are never forgotten and always supported.
