National American Legion Headquarters
The American Legion is the largest U.S. veterans organization with more than 1.6 million members who strengthen the nation through programs, services and advocacy for those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, youth and communities.
The National American Legion Headquarters
The American Legion National Headquarters serves as the backbone of the organization, providing leadership, coordination, and vital resources that empower Posts, Districts, and Departments across the nation to serve veterans, their families, and their communities. Located in Indianapolis, Indiana—with key operations also based in Washington, D.C.—Headquarters ensures that the Legion’s mission of service, advocacy, and remembrance continues to thrive nationwide.
One of its primary responsibilities is advocacy. The American Legion’s Washington office works tirelessly with Congress and federal agencies to protect and improve benefits for veterans, service members, and their families. This includes supporting legislation related to VA healthcare, disability compensation, education benefits, and national defense. Their efforts help ensure that the voices of millions of veterans are heard at the highest levels of government.
The National Headquarters also oversees veteran support programs, such as the Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) program for families in need, the National Emergency Fund (NEF) for disaster relief, and various initiatives aimed at helping veterans find employment, access VA care, and transition successfully back into civilian life.
Another critical function is membership support. Headquarters provides administrative and technical assistance to local Posts, helping them grow, manage records, and connect with their members. Through training, guidance, and national resources, Posts like American Legion Post 64 in Ahwatukee can focus more effectively on their mission of community service and veteran advocacy.
The American Legion National Headquarters also manages youth and community programs, including Boys State and Boys Nation, American Legion Baseball, and the High School Oratorical Contest. These programs help shape the next generation of leaders by promoting citizenship, responsibility, and patriotism.
Finally, the Headquarters preserves the organization’s proud history and identity. Through publications like The American Legion Magazine and outreach campaigns, they share the stories of veterans, highlight ongoing issues, and reinforce the Legion’s dedication to “Veterans Strengthening America.”
In every way, the American Legion National Headquarters stands as the guiding force behind the organization’s local, state, and national efforts—ensuring that every veteran, no matter where they live, can count on the strength of the Legion family.
